Chiropractic Treatment for Knee Pain
If you are suffering with knee pain, it is important to find out what is causing the pain. Below is a list of some common knee problems. Chiropractors are able to diagnose your knee pain by taking a full case history, i.e. when did the pain start, how did happen, what type of pain is it? The chiropractor then performs orthopaedic and neurological tests to assess the entire lower limb. At Soonius Chiropractic, state of the art foot scanning technology is also used to gather information about pressure in the feet while standing and walking. Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS)
PFPS or Chondromalacia Patella is felt as a general pain at the front of the knee. It is worse going up and down stairs, and the knee can feel “crunchy”. It is due to mal-tracking of the patella (knee cap), which causes irritation and degeneration of the cartilage behind the knee cap. Possible causes are weak or tight muscles of the leg. Over-pronation of the feet (when the arches are dropped) may also give rise to PFPS. Your chiropractor will assess all the muscles and joints of the lower limb, then create a unique treatment programme to correct the underlying problem. This may involve mobilisation of tight joints, stretching/massaging tight muscles and home exercises. Orthotics (custom made insoles) may also be helpful. Click here for more information on orthotics.
Patellar Tendonitis
Patellar Tendonitis is sometimes referred to as “Jumper’s Knee”. Repetitive stress to the patellar tendon leads to inflammation and pain at the front of the knee.
Iliotibial Band Syndrome
Iliotibial Band Syndrome is a tightness of the muscle and the band of fascia on the outside of the leg. Chiropractors find out what has caused the muscle to tighten. If you are suffering with Iliotibial Band Syndrome, your pelvis may be out of alignment causing unnecessary stress/imbalance of the muscles. Your chiropractor will find the underlying cause, and help you to correct it so that the problem doesn’t re-occur.
If there has been a traumatic cause of your knee pain, the chiropractor will assess whether there has been damage to the ligaments or menisci. Referral for MRI is possible if needed.
